FAQs

Welcome to Luminosa – we are delighted that you have decided to join us for a taster session.

We know that walking into a new group for the first time can feel a little daunting, but don’t worry – we’re a very friendly bunch and we’ll make sure you’re well looked after from the moment you arrive.

Here is all the information you need to know about joining the choir: –

Getting Started

There are no formal auditions to join us. We’re a friendly, inclusive group focused on the joy of singing together rather than perfection. After your 2nd session, our Artistic Director Rebekah will run a 5-minute vocal session just to ensure you are placed in the right voice part.

Absolutely. Many of our members joined after a long break from singing. We provide a supportive environment where you can build your confidence at your own pace.

Don’t worry! Our Artistic Director Rebekah will help you find where you feel most comfortable, whether that’s Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass – during your first few sessions. It’s a very relaxed process.

Rehearsals & Music

Not at all. While we do provide sheet music, we also use audio rehearsal tracks. You’ll find that you pick up the melodies much faster than you’d expect!

We rehearse every Tuesday from 19:45 21:30 at Alton Maltings. We enjoy a 10-minute biscuit break halfway through to catch up with other choir members and have a chat.

Our repertoire is wonderfully diverse! We enjoy a vibrant mix of choral classics, show-stopping musical theatre numbers, and contemporary arrangements. Whether it’s a soaring anthem or a modern favourite, we choose music that is both challenging to learn and a joy to perform.

Just yourself, a bottle of water, and a pencil for marking your music. We provide the music and folders for concerts.

Membership, Costs & Commitment

Membership is £192 per year (or £64 per term, or £16 per month). This goes towards venue hire, our Artistic Director, our pianist and licensing the music we sing. We offer a free taster session so you can see if we’re the right fit for you first!

We tend to hire copies of the pieces we perform and charge a small loan fee to cover the costs. We also print some sheet music and charge a small amount to cover the printing costs.

We understand that life happens! We just ask that you let your Section Leader know and mark yourself as absent on our messaging app Spond. If you miss a session, you can listen to the shared rehearsal tracks and stay up to speed.

Absolutely! We’re more than just a singing group; we’re a community. Throughout the year, we host a variety of social events, from our popular quiz nights to our festive Christmas get-togethers and informal post-rehearsal drinks. It’s a great way to get to know your fellow singers outside of the music.

Performances

We encourage all our members to take part in our performances. Singing live is a huge part of the Luminosa experience and is where the music really comes to life! We move together as a team, and the concerts are the rewarding “finish line” where we share all our hard work with an audience.

We have three concerts per year in Spring, Summer, and Autumn.

For most performances, we wear all black but we always send out a clear guide well in advance so you have plenty of time to prepare.
